Expert Tips For Removing Pollen From Your Home

Expert Tips For Removing Pollen From Your Home

Do you or one of your family members suffer from seasonal allergies? Do you experience itchy, watery eyes, sneezing and even asthma symptoms during the summer months?

Here are some easy steps you can take to ensure that you have clean air that is virtually pollen-free inside your home.

Keep Your Doors and Windows Closed

The first step in eliminating pollen from your home is to prevent it from getting in as much as possible. The best way to accomplish this is to keep your windows and doors closed as much as possible. This is particularly important during the times of the day that are known to have high pollen counts. These include the early morning hours and midday between 10 AM and 3 PM.

Use a HEPA Filter in Your Air Conditioning System

As the fan of your heating and cooling system forces air towards your ductwork, it first passes through a filter to catch airborne debris and contaminants. Standard filters used in your furnace and air conditioning system are good at removing dirt and dust from the air. HEPA filters, on the other hand, are capable of catching even smaller particles in their ultra tight mesh, including pollen.

Remember to replace your filter at least every three months, or as soon as it becomes visibly dirty, whichever comes first. If a filter is clogs up, it becomes much less effective.

Maintain a Relative Humidity Level Between 40 And 50%

Dust mites and other allergens thrive in humidity. So, when hot summer months bring increased moisture in the air, it’s important to control the relative humidity in your home. You should also avoid having air that is too dry, as this can cause sinus irritation and aggravate asthma and eczema symptoms.

While portable dehumidifiers can be effective in reducing the humidity in a single room or a small space, your best bet is to install a whole home dehumidifier. With this kind of unit added to your heating and cooling system, you’ll be able to keep an optimal humidity level between 40 and 50% to combat allergens and deliver greater overall comfort in your home.

By following these 3 tips, you’ll be able to create a clean, healthy and comfortable living environment for the allergy sufferers in your family.
