Going Green Tips from Your Trusted Experts

Calling all green lovers: another Earth Day is almost here! This international day has been celebrated since 1970, and we’re thrilled to be participating in the festivities again this year.

All of us here at KB Complete Plumbing Heating and Cooling Inc. are doing our part to keep the planet green and healthy for the coming generations. To help you do the same, we’ve put together some simple and effective tips you can use for going green.

1. Go Solar

When you go solar, not only will you save money on your energy bills, but you will also reduce your carbon footprint. Especially if the power you’re using right now comes from fossil fuels.

Solar appliances you can purchase include refrigerators, freezers, and gadget chargers. And if you want to cut your carbon footprint even more, consider installing a solar array on your roof or investing in a plug-and-play solar system that will reduce your reliance on grid power.

2. Natural Cooling  natural-cooling

If you tend to rely heavily on air conditioning to keep your home comfortable in summer, then you’re already aware of how expensive it can be to cool your house during a hot summer.

But what if we told you that you could cool your house, help the environment, turn off your air conditioner, and save money all at the same time? And what if we told you that you could accomplish all this by planting trees?

Before air conditioning was common, people used to keep their homes cool by strategically planting trees along east and west walls to block direct sunlight in summer, reduce the UV coming in through the windows, and keep the walls cooler.

You can do the same, and you’ll cut your carbon footprint and your energy bills at the same time.

3. Efficient Products

Switching to energy efficient light bulbs, such as LEDs and CFLs, can cut the amount of power you use to illuminate your house by up to 80 percent. Similarly, by investing in energy efficient and ENERGY STAR rated appliances, tankless water heaters, furnaces, and other HVAC products, you can save energy, save the environment, and save money.

4. Seal the Housechimney-flue

While the chimney flue is great for keeping your family safe when you’re having fires, it also provides an avenue for hot or cold air from outside to enter your house.

It allows heated or cooled air from inside to get out, meaning you have to spend more to keep your house comfortable.

When you’re not having fires during the cooler seasons, close the flue. When you’re not using the fireplace at all during warmer seasons, consider sealing it up completely.

adjust-the-thermostat5. Use the Thermostat Wisely

The ideal summer temperature for your house is 78 F or higher, and the ideal winter temperature is around 68 F or lower.

Keeping your thermostat at these temperatures will help reduce your energy bills and your carbon footprint.

And during the day when nobody is home, lower (in winter) or increase (in summer) the temperature in the house by 7 to 10 degrees to see a 10 percent savings on your energy bill.
